Blackstronaut Rap…

blackstronaut

I upped the pic for this drop after I returned home from the Watch The Throne listening event at the Hayden Planetarium. My plan was to finish the drop in the morning before I went off to the day grizzle. I was still kind of buzzed too from the unlimited Belvedere being poured into my mouf.

First off, let me just tell you that record company people are CRAYZAY. The event felt like the launch of a spaceship and some of the folks who had gathered were concerned whether they would be allowed on the rocket or were they there simply to be the rocket’s fuel. I had no such misgivings tho’. I was sure I was to be used as a booster module which is discarded and sent back to Earth after the rocket has broken the atmosphere. Some folks, like my homegirl Stacey were upset when they didn’t find themselves in the inner circle sanctum.

Multi-colored wristbands and secret handshakes aside we were all here to hear an album which we imagine will be the zenith of pop culture rap for our generation. What I find to be a profound backdrop is the economic state of America as posited next to two artists who can’t spend money fast enough. Obaama should have just gone to Jay-Z for a loan to help pay off the deficit instead of acquiescing to a bunch of old white who call him a ‘tar baby’ even tho’ he is high yellow (schmores marshmallow baby: Just enough chocolate).

Jay-Z and KanYe are the high life personified in Black entertainment. Who is left to live this lavish? Michael Jackson dead. Eddie Murphy has issues. Tiger Woods isn’t a swinger anymore. Michael Jordan lost half in a divorce settlement. There isn’t anyone left to tell us what to spend our tax return checks on and do it with so much charisma. Watch The Throne however isn’t a paean to overpriced luggage. Watch The Throne is KanYe’s statement that he is no longer the little brother who Jay can give rap noogies too.

I think KanYe is giving Jay-Z a bit of his own medicine on being annoying and self-absorbed. The album listening session was too loud for me to really connect to the record but there were enough moments and gems that I was able to pluck from the cosmic background. Sadly, the album doesn’t surpass my expectations at this point. Maybe on a subsequent listen it will all make sense to me. Maybe KanYe and Jay-Z are so far ‘out there’ that they are rapping in another galaxy? A universe filled with fiances named BeYonce.

I can’t call it else I might spoil it. You listen to Watch The Throne and tell me what you think. Spaceship status or a spaced out shit platter?

Polo x New Balance Got Me Open…

us open

I wasn’t gonna fux with this year’s U.S. Open lifestyle offering. I loved the colorblocking from last year’s knits so much I didn’t feel like dropping a buck on another shirt that I couldn’t respectably rock this season.

That all changed after Rock The Dub sent me a link to the Polo ralph Lauren x New Balance tennis shoe. This is a REAL tennis shoe internets. The instep features a composite material which protects your foot from the abrasion of stopping and starting as you chase volleys on a tennis hardcourt. I’m sure that the New Balance leather is premium also.

My secret plan is to take Chocolate Snowflake on a dinner date to the Open. You don’t need tickets to enter the pavilion to grab a bite. We will stroll around the shoppes and then BAM! I will slip into the Polo Ralph Lauren store with her and show her how the shoes match the shirt and the hat.

She can’t say no to that can she?

Do You Know What Time It Is?

paragon

Paragon Sports was the spot where you copped all your official high end hiking gear. Paragon wasn’t the type spot you could steam thru. You would have had to be the illest booster of ALL TIME to rack ta Paragon. If you tell me you used to boost up there you lose all credibility to me. The 10th Floor of Lord & Taylor was an easier rack.

One of the points of status for a street kid in NYC was to be able to copp some shit from a store like Paragon. This is where you bought your K-Swiss, or your New Balance. Having a shopping bag from Paragon was on some level like Saks 5th Ave. Niggas from the hood didn’t go to Paragon, they went to Modell’s or V.I.M.’s or the local Army+Navy spot. Paragon was my spot since I copped my OG 40 Belows from there in 1987.

I had some bread from my nickel and dime late night white dealing in the downtown clubs. Let me not minimize the cash I had at the time since it was several hundred bucks. I was going to Paragon on a mission to blow my grip. The shit that I was hot for at the time was time immortalized. The hottest watch in the game was the Tag-Heuer ‘Formula 1’.

Tag had the sporty style and Swiss movement of the slickest watches but the pricepoint that allowed a regular nigga to live large. Paragon had a sale on the timepieces too. If I had another chance at this moment I would have copped two(2) watches. As a comic collector I was always fond of doubling up so that I always had a mint condition item to rock out for a special occasion.

I was on my way to Paragon on Monday after I got back from a weekend visiting my shorty at Morgan State. Things in B’More didn’t work out for me as I had planned. When I finally got back to Queens my life had changed irreparably. I wasn’t going to be copping a watch. I was lucky just to be alive. Chasing this lifestyle just almost got me merc’ked. You wanna hear the story?

What Would You Give To Get This Dude?

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Pause, natch, but you already knew that sports were ghey.

Carlos Beltran came to the Mets six years ago after playing himself into an All-Star contract in Houston. Beltran wasn’t a perennial All-Star tho. He was more like the Jerome James of baseball. The Mets weren’t just hoodwinked by Bernard Madoff, but also by players like the Carlosses – Beltran and Delgado.

Delgado is long gone from Flushing and now its time for Beltran to pack his bags as well. I just don’t want him to wind up on a contender OR more importantly a team in the Met’s division. Beltran doesn’t deserve that much. If he had been a great Met then maybe I could allow him to go to the Phillies.

If Beltran wants a deal he better accept Kansas City.

CHRISETTE MICHELE
Thursday, July 28
Springfield Park, Queens
Show at 7:00 pm

New York native Chrisette Michele is a “soulful songbird” as described by Entertainment Weekly, who has been shining on the R&B music scene since 2007. She released her debut album, ‘I Am’ to critical praise, including her first Grammy for “Be OK” featuring will.i.am. Her sophomore album, ‘Epiphany’ fortified her success by debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. It highlighted her “fiery vocal performance” as she backs up every word with strong emotion. Her latest album, ‘Let Freedom Reign’ is driven by Michele’s self-confidence and charged with a “blissful marriage of fiery spirit and artful musicality.” Throughout the album, her “timelessly sleek voice” has room to shine over crisp, understated backdrops. Michele’s “meaty voice” powerfully stimulates her albums as “her voice has real pain in it, with a cry at the back of the throat that lends complexity to even the happiest love songs,” according to the NY Daily News.
