Vh-1 Does Care About Old Heads…

hhh

Vh-1 was bound to get it really right sooner or later. They were bound to produce a hip-Hop Honors show where every honoree was truly iconic and important to the genre of art and music that we love called Hip-Hop. This year’s honorees are singularly incredible so as a combined production I think this will be a stellar evening.

As we blog I am already going in hard to get the i.C.’s red carpet access for real. This way we can actually dialogue with some of our heroes from the past twenty years. I have nothing but love for all the talent listed, especially the host, TRACY MORGAN. I’m going to find out if Dominican Lou is a big CYPRESS HILL fan.

hhh

CYPRESS HILL needs no introduction for anyone that fucks with that funky, get high rap music. They have been touring and releasing albums since 1991. That is a long time to be pulling from the bong on that Cheech and Chong. I’m amazed these dudes can even make it to their show dates. When they hit the stage it is all business too. I’m predicting that Ice Cube and Snoop will help introduce them. How sick would it be if the Brooklyn spitter Joell Ortiz brought them out? Very sick should be your answer.

hhh

TOO SHORT finally gets his due. Short Dog is one of Hip-Hop’s independent distribution pioneers. He was moving units all throughout Cali faster than .MP3 files. Short put Oaktown on the map in a serious way. I’m glad that Vh-1 recognized this man for his game.

hhh

NAUGHTY BY NATURE is another group that is overdue from the golden age of Shout Rap. Naughty preceded Leaders of the New School, Onyx, and Das EFX as the premier group to shout in unison all their rhymes on the ends of stanzas. Considering how fast and furious Treach could deliver his rhymes you need to show that man Vin Rock some respect.

hhh

SLICK RICK will bring the house down I guarantee. Everybody in the Hammerstein Ballroom will be singing ‘La-Di-Da-Di’ like no tomorrow. Will Doug E. Fresh perform with Slick Rick as well? I hope so. I will never forget my classmate KHALID SALES bringing that cassette tape to school with Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh performing ‘The Show’. KHALID taped the performance live at the Rooftop Roller Disco. Another one of NYC’s classic lost but not forgotten landmarks.

hhh

DE LA SOUL might be the most influential group in Hip-Hop. Evar. You wouldn’t have the diversity of the genre without the seeds they planted almost two decades ago. How incredible do you think it is to be able to rhyme about just being yourself? Eminem, Wale, KanYe and every hipster rapper that has ever touched a microphone owes a debt to this collective. This is the most overdue award of all time. For once Vh-1 got their shit straight and is saving Hip-Hop. And by hook, or crook, I will be in the building to enjoy that moment.

Or else BILLY X. SUNDAY might have to go to jail.

If I had a high school diploma I might be able to wrap my head around the statistics that detail the incarceration rates for African American males. it’s some confusing shit like…

In twelve states, between 10 and 15 percent of adult black men are incarcerated.

  • In ten states, between 5 and 10 percent of black adults are incarcerated.
  • In twelve states, black men are incarcerated at rates between twelve and sixteen times greater than those of white men.
  • In fifteen states, black women are incarcerated at rates between ten and thirty-five times greater than those of white women.
  • In six states, black youth under age eighteen are incarcerated in adult facilities at rates between twelve and twenty-five times greater than those of white youth.
  • The gist of all this is that Black niggers stay getting locked up while white niggers don’t get broken off with bids as often.

I’m not here to debate the causes of this shit. America is a racist country. Period. Point blank. White is shook to get on some equality shit because then they might have to get the proverbial shoe put on them as often as the Blacks catch it. White knows that shit ain’t no fun. White knows when to get the fuck outta Dodge. These are the same dudes that jetted from the Black plague, the potato famine and that faggy New Wave music from Soft Cell.

*reminds self to play extended version of Tainted Love*

Being Black sucks, yada, yada, yada. I didn’t have to watch CNN’s Black In America to know this. What is scaring the fuck out of me though is how much the list of people who are have-nots is increasing. It’s as if poverty were having an expansion draft. I’m not worried about being the first pick, but in the later rounds I might get selected.

Being poor AND Black is just about the pits. You see how the poor were shot in the back in New Orleans? People were hungry and sick and BlackWater USA was allowed to shoot to kill if you were outside of your home after dark. If the rate of economic disenfranchisement continues at the rate of social disenfranchisement my ass will be getting arrested pretty soon.

*note to XXL managers: send me that check*

My one saving grace that is keeping me and several other African American males from being incarcerated is the fact that DMX tries his damnedest to get arrested every single day.

A few weeks ago Dark Man X was arrested four(4) times in one day. Once in Miami. Then in Arizona. He was extradited to New Mexico on a bench wartrant, and then he was arrested in his sleep while returning to Arizona.

How many motherfuckers can get a warrant while they are asleep? That is how bad ass DMX is. This fool is possibly the most hardbody rapper of all time and I want to personally thank him for being that gully.

Every day the police are out arresting DMX that means that some lucky Black man gets a reprieve from brutality somewhere. That anonymous Black man is free to buy fried chicken wings from his favorite supermarket or chinese kitchen. He is free to enjoy Crystal light Mango Iced Tea from his favorite sippy cup while searching for downloadable video clips of his favorite adult actress(Lauren Phoenix) from his computer station in his parent’s basement. All because DMX carries the burden of others on his back.

Not that I’m wishing any ill will on DMX, but at some point the authorities will incarcerate him which will mean that the arrests of regular semi-law abiding Blacks will have to increase again. I know my white understand how statistics and averages work. When that shit happens that DMX is put under the jail I am staying my ass in the fucking house until Mike Tyson shows his face.

Everybody nose why Jay-Z can’t leave rap alone.

I am not going to even front like I didn’t have some ‘Glow In The Dark’ dust sprinkled on my Lucky Charms last night when my fellow iNternets Celebrity homey CASIMIR NOZKOWSKI texted me from the encore concert at MSG. Jay-Z came out and did a preview of a song from what is rumored to be his next album project ‘Blueprint 3’.

I could only imagine how banana head the crowd was at that moment. Jay-Z is far from my favorite rapper, but dude is an undeniable legend in rap music. Even if I don’t like his albums as cohesive pieces of art, whatever that means, this nigga has hits for days. I remember the last time I saw Jay-Z in concert during his anniversary performance for ‘Reasonable Doubt’. The part of that show that blew off the roof was his encore set of random hits.

    jay

Match up Jay-Z with KanYe West again and that project has all the potential to be a watershed moment in rap music history. Wow, what the hell kind of weed do these industry niggas pass around? I’m throwing out hyperbole like this is Christmas time and I don’t want Santa to consider the fact that I cursed him out for eleven months. Honestly, I’m still psyched from standing near Maxwell, Busta Rhymes and Double-O.

I’m a littled annoyed however that some people no longer choose to name their albums, as if the joints that preceded the latest were so unforgettable. In the real world of architecture if this is the third blueprint already maybe your design is flawed. The truth of the matter is that Jay-Z’s ‘Blueprint 3’ exec produced by KanYe West may be more like buying some shit from Cinnabon. It smells good as fuck, but after you taste that shit, not so much.

    jay ye

KanYe and Jay have made hit songs though. Ever since the Dynasty album ‘Ye Tudda has been producing some memorable tracks for Jay-Z. My favorite by far is the ‘Takeover’ which sampled the classic Doors song ‘Five 2 One’. Let’s face it, these dudes have done it before and right now no one is hotter behind the boards than KanYe West . Not Timbo, not the Neptunes, and not even Jay’s number one hit-making producer Just Blaze.

The question that arises though is real and daunting…

    jay ye

Who will find the goofier jacket to wear?

Okay not that question. This question…

Is Jay-Z up to the task of holding down his end of the project?

Jay-Z’s last two albums were cliché on one hand and retread on the other. ‘American Gangster’ did have some bright spots. ‘Kingdome Come’ had even fewer. I’m just thankful at least neither of them were titled Hard Knock Life: Volume 8.

With everything in the world going for him outside of rap music I wonder why in the world would he return to rapping. Someone needs to make sure that the folks slaving, er, serving at the 40/40 Club are getting their dental benefits.

Didn’t Jay-Z just reportedly also buy the company that makes all the Yankees fitted hats?

Whew, that was a close call. He might have had to start wearing Mets hats like NaS does. The Lord knows you haters would call him a biter.

    nas jay

Then it dawned on me why Jay-Z was forced from retirement yet again…

    BeYonce needs some new wigs.

You people wouldn’t understand just how expensive all BeYonce’s blonde hairpieces must be. I imagine them joints are crafted from the finest Russian orphan girl locks. None of that Chernobyl shit either. Straight Siberian foster home specials. I have never seen BeYonce wearing the same wig twice. She has Jay-Z grinding hard to keep her looking that good.

Plus ol’ boy is spending millions to keep her in the finest automobiles. And you know you cant put no low-test gas in the tank of a Rolls. That shit requires 101 octane. I will give Jay some credit though for being frugal when it comes to his own needs. Here he is with BeYonce at several different basketball games and even though his wife flips her wigs like no tomorrow he stays rocking the same black shirt.

    jay bey

I think this collabo will be good for Jay-Z in that it might give him a chance to let that bitch breathe. Maybe Jay-Z can bring ‘Ye Tudda with him to a few Nets games. It must be a pain in the ass to always have to tell BeYonce where the ball is. And speaking of where the balls are stashed, or rather where the balls are kept (these metaphors can go on for days)…

Mark your calendars for the last weekend in October. That’s when Jay-Z’s roommate LARRY JOHNSON (supercalifragilistic double-entendre [ll] to anyone with the surname Johnson) comes to town to play against the Jets. I can just see Jay-Z, KanYe, BeYonce and LArray all up that midtown apartment playing Jenga and Connect4 [ll].

When Lupe stops by they make him walk to Brooklyn for some cheesecake.

    Yeah, goodtimes… Actually, G.O.O.D.times.

So this is why I am hyped for the ‘Blueprint 3’ album. It has classic potential just from the talent that will be involved in making it a reality, and most importantly it gives me a reason to enjoy this rap music blogging shit.

Oh yeah, and one last thing…

    Still Glowing…

Yes, this is the concert of the year. ‘Graduation’ was a certified instant classic album. It’s anthemic from the first song to the last. It’s the kind of album that was meant to be performed in an arena in front of tens of thousands of people holding their cellphones, lighters and glowsticks in the air. The fact that KanYe’s mother passed away during his ascent to the position of the ultimate rap performer is just some drama that even Hollywood could not have crafted.

Despite KanYe’s perceived arrogance or bitchassness or whatever attitude that we imagine he has the truth is that if there were ever someone that covered the majority of cultural pathos in music it would be KanYe West. This dude is the everyman. He wants it so badly and he works so hard to achieve it. My favorite aspect of KanYe West is that he is motivated by people that say he can’t do something. There is no better feeling than throwing shit at your haters. I need to be more like KanYe. I’m going to get those pills.

The Glow In The Dark concert might also be called the hipster rap douchebag festival somewhere on the internets. The truth is that there weren’t too many hipsters in my sightline. The concert was all Hip-Hop too. I have never seen a Hip-Hop concert in an arena with this level of production and energy. This includes my experiences going to see Eminem perform. Now that nigga should be considered a hipster rap douchebag. All the acts that took the stage were surpisingly seasoned and polished. The show was like witnessing a rap music revival sponsored by the church of Hip-Hop. The performers were energetic, earnest, decadent and relevant.

Get yourself a ticket to the Glow In The Dark show if you got your money right. After that I won’t be able to tell you nothing.

    CONSEQUENCE
Cons opened the show on time. I loved his album ‘Don’t Quit Your Day Job’. Cons is one of those rappers who require you to press the rewind button. The best thing that Cons did though was his collaboration with KanYe. Cons is the dude that helped ‘Ye Tudda take his flow to that next level. PETER ROSENBERG manned the deejay set for Cons performance. This was a good way to get the show started. The spaceship was taking off.

    LUPE FIASCO
Lupe surprised the fuck out of me with his performance. First off, he came out on stage as the embodiment of cool in an all black ensemble complete with tie and vest. ‘Kick Push’ was his first song and I almost thought he was on a skateboard while he was on stage. Lupe’s energy and his attitude were incredible. This dude really likes to rap and he has no problem remembering his own lyrics. His breath control on ‘Go Go Gadget Flow’ was remarkable. If I ever said anything bad about Lupe before I take it back. His set made me a fan of his music. I love people that love to perform with no reservation. This is why Lupe is always falling off stages. He runs and jumps around with reckless abandon. We should all like our jobs that much.

    N.E.R.D.
I’ve seen N.E.R.D. perform live before so I knew what I was going to get from them. N.E.R.D. brought out a band to back them up. The guitars let PHARRELL get his rockstar right. What I liked about N.E.R.D. the most is that they didn’t waste our time or slow down the pace. Star Track Records lived up their name by putting our spaceship in orbit. ‘She Wants To Move’ is when they let some of the prettiest women in the audience get on stage and shake their moneymakers. That was the perfect finale for them.

    KanYe West.
I have never seen ‘Ye Tudda in concert before. Actually, I saw him about six years ago at the Supper Club during a taping of Def Poetry. Mos Def brought him out and called him the “future of Hip-Hop”. I certainly didn’t appreciate Mos’ clairvoyance at the time. KanYe West is really Hip-Hop’s Luke Skywalker. He saved Hip-Hop with his passion for making G.O.O.D. music (no pandering intended, okay maybe some pandering intended). The audience sang along with KanYe through every song. It was like we were taking a trip with him through his life. Through the ups and downs, the triumph, the tragedy and finally the victory. Shit was wildly emotional. Don’t be confused buy the elaborate set designed to be a spaceship. This performance, like all his performances, was personal.

I love to tease KanYe West like the rest of the internets does. His hubris makes him a perfect target at times. Then there are times that KanYe flips the script, literally. There is no one in the entertainment industry, not even NaS, who would have made the statements that KanYe made on broadcast television post-Hurricane Katrina. For all of his vanity he shows us his vulnerability. This is what makes him invincible. Go see this show tonight if you are in NYC. You’ll be a better person for it.

‘Ye Tudda Lets His Soul Glow…

Okay, so I don’t totally feel a kind of way about missing the ‘Rock The Bells’ show this past weekend. That was my fault anyhoo for not securing my tickets months ago.

I wasn’t really pressed though because I knew I was going to see ‘Ye Tudda at Madison Square Garden for the NYC leg of his ‘Glow In The Dark’ tour. I’m sure that ‘RTB’ was definitely some historic shit too, but after seeing Cons 2 The Quence, Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D. and Mr.West all put it down I am ready to buy a ticket to the encore performance tonight. It was that good. KanYe was that good. [ll].

Before I recap the impressions I got from the show I wanted to do a drop with some of my favorite pics from the night. I can’t remember the last time I was at the Garden and the energy was this sky high. It was like a Knicks playoff game, except there were hell’a more sexy women, including the lovely C.S. I usually take her out on Tuesday nights to the free movie that her Optimum Rewards card gets us. We sneak some Chipotle into the theater and watch some shit like ‘Step Brothers’ or whatever. Last night I took my lady to a first class show. Complete with front row tickets courtesy of Universal Island Def Jam Roc-A-Fella. Did I say Interscope too?

    glow

    Really real front row sonn!

A whole lot of folks were in the building to catch this concert which has been buzzed about as one of the greatest Hip-Hop shows of all time. Whenever I hear someone give something that extra hyperbole I always get skeptical. I’ve seen a whole lot of Hip-Hop shows and for a show to be the greatest it has to bring that shit from the beginning to the end.

This show brought it. And then some.

Okay, okay, let me show you some pics first…

The original Retro Kids. Yeah, that’s an oxymoron, but you get my point I hope. Props to the high top fades a/k/a the Negro Mullet.

Oh Shit Alert! Maxwell cut off his damn hair.

Wale is my nigga. He just returned from a quick tour overseas. I asked him how he liked it and he said, “over-rated”. I have to ask him more about that since he is Nigerian and there is a shiiteload of folks from Lagos living in London. I wonder if his countrymen didn’t have no love for the kid. No matter, I fucks with Wale [ll].

My second favorite picture from the concert is of Skateboard P’s earring. That shit cost more money than the car I drive.

My favorite moment of the night… During the N.E.R.D. set I tried to get in a pic with Bussa Bus. Dude gave me the “SHHHH” sound and told me to “pay attention to the show”. Busta is truly out of his mind so I took the pic anyhoo. Then Busta realized that it only takes a second to make a new fan.

Come back here in the afternoon for my concert recap.
