doernbecher

Shouts to my brother Premium Pete for shooting me these images from the Doernbecher Freestyle Project.

About Doernbecher Freestyle

Doernbecher Freestyle was created in 2004 when Doernbecher Foundation board member Michael Doherty invited one of Nike’s shoe designers to take a tour of the hospital. It was designer Marcus Tayui’s vision to see patients design shoes with the proceeds benefiting the hospital that in many cases has saved their lives.

Part of the program involves a launch party held in October where more than 300 business and community leaders come together to see the shoes, bid on limited pairs and meet the patients/designers in person.

Now in its seventh year, this extraordinary program has raised over $2.4 million for the hospital, which uses the funds for everything from clinical programs and hospital construction to providing care for uninsured children. This year’s patient designers come from Doernbecher’s cancer, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery and nephrology programs.

Several years ago I purchased a pair of Doernbecher Dunks at a Niketown party. I wish all my sneaker acquisitions had the benefit of donating money to worthy causes like this. I’d certainly have put a dent in cancer with all the sneakers I have.

This years offering has plenty of flavor and originality as well as some futuristic silhouettes. Here’s a quick preview of my favorite styles…

Air Jordan III’s with an icy outsole? Fire flames james.

God is in the details and the Zoom Vomero is chock full of graphics and materials details. The gingham print is so effin’ country cabin. The premium leather is also a nice touch. My favorite detail is the articulation of the outsole.

I was never into the P-Rod signature skateboard shoe but this pair of P-Rod 2.5’s turned me out with the graphic on the removable insole.

jedi masters and lightsabers, oh my.

My favorite pair of the pack is the Air Zenyth. The silhouette is clean and understated. I think these might be women’s sizes only so I shouldn’t hesitate in copping a pair for Chocolate Snowflake.

I’m not an Air Force 1 dude in the least, but these joints have a colorway reminiscent of the volcano lava inspired ‘Heat Rocks‘.

Converse To Musicians: Strike Up The Brand…

chucks

The sporting goods company Converse might just be ushering in a new artistic renaissance. Converse is opening a recording studio in north Brooklyn where studio time is absolutely free. Let a struggling musician tell you what their most prohibitive cost is and they will tell you about all the money they are spending for studio recording sessions.

To earn the chips needed to get into a decent studio, artists used to work at retail stores like Tower Records, Virgin Megastore or the recently shuttered FatBeats. Since no one is buying CDs any longer those stores don’t need employees, but musicians still need money to record their music.

In steps Converse as a patron of the arts. Sort of. Converse’s Chuck Taylors has been the singular shoe of musicians from punk rockers like Sid Vicious and the Ramones to pop music gangbanging rappers like Snoop Dogg and The Game. It makes me wonder if Converse is spending all of this money in order to create an anthem on the level of Run-DMC’s ‘My adidas’.

The truth is that the music industry has migrated into businesses that make money in this recession because they sell things that people are still interested in paying for. Basically everything BUT music. Converse, McDonald’s, Nike and Starbucks are the new record labels and distributors. That is, until I figure a way to download a pair of SB Dunks and a quarter pounder with cheese.

kito uni setup

The fall is the most classic season of all. Come back to school with me. The old school. A little sweater and a little jacket and you are straight chillin’. BTW, make sure your chapaeu is the winners.

The colorblock Polo Ralph Lauren jacket is murderous material.

I have been hooked ever since 1986.

Criminal Stylists Unite!

steinbrenner

An article published in the NYTimes earlier this month says that criminals choose the Yankee cap over most sports related apparel because of the ‘Jay-Z effect’ and the cool factor he brings to the item. Ha! The Yankees ownership does more crime on the daily robbing the Bronx residents of their resources than Jay-Z has in his entire life.

But the article made me think outside of the box…

If I could just get a placement on a rapist doing a perp walk I might could move the rest of these joints.
