What do you say when the queen passes away?

I hope she gets her due at long last. Her voice was raw beautiful power. The heir to Diana Ross’ pop music princess throne Whitney never really got her castle or her crown.

Long live the queen!

ESSO – ‘Son Of SAMO’ EP (download here)

Esso has been on my radar for several years but we never connected because I didn’t really fux with him musically. His music isn’t bad but I just didn’t have a place for him in my rotation of artists.

I’ve been waiting for a chance to work with him on a project and I think the perfect storm just came over the horizon. Esso’s latest project is a tribute to the artistic supernova called Jean-Michel Basquiat. SAMO was Basquiat’s graff alter-ego. I love the way Esso captured this footage from Basquiat’s movie and interviews to form his EP intro.

After listening to the EP several times I chose this song ‘Death Do Us’ to create some visuals to. People SEE music now before they hear it so I think a YouTube video of the highest caliber will be a great look for an artist on the verge of putting it on.

The song is about aspirations and recognizing your humble and struggle beginnings. The video I shot today is my first real music video. This joint will be my Hype Williams’ debut.

He is the last Don.

Don Cornelius and his production ‘Soul Train’ is an indelible part of my life. Before music videos were being produced it was ‘Soul Train’ which featured the artists and the styles that would come to represent Black people and our presentation of American culture and lifestyle.

There aren’t any words to say to express my gratitude for Don Cornelius giving this filmreel to me and the rest of the world.

Thank you sir.
