R.I.P. Dwayne McDuffie, Comicbook Pioneer…

Quiet as we have kept it, Black dudes are disproportionately comic book nerds. The whole idea of someone bringing justice to the planet is some Black bullshit. We are the ones that need the equality. White folks are mostly Lex Luthor in that they already own all the means to production and distribution, and they don’t have any serious intentions in upsetting the apple cart, unless that means adding more apples, of course.

Dwayne McDuffie was the quintessential comic book nerd who loved the medium so much that he dedicated his life to making it bigger, better and thankfully, Blacker. McDuffie founded Milestone Media company with which he created a series of comic book titles featuring superheroes from the darker side of the spectrum.

But it wasn’t just Black superheroes that McDuffie was concerned with creating but a reference for Black kids who could see and read about the diaspora in their communities. Poor, working class, educated and wealthy Blacks were all getting their burn.

The highest salute to McDuffie’s creative talent was that Warner Brothers media allowed him to revision their staple characters. The Justice League went from being a campy, corny 1970s kids cartoon to a seriously storied animated series for the new millennium. The key to McDuffie as a writer is that he understands that comic book characters have to represent the realized world, not the idealized world. In the realized world heroes aren’t always perfect, but they keep the faith.

This should be the lesson I think I will take from Dwayne McDuffie’s unfortunately too young demise.

I’ll keep the faith that one day a Black hero will rise to save us all.

McDuffie’s last piece of work was the adaption of the All-Star Superman graphic novel into an animated feature.

In Dwayne’s posthumous honor, I have several copies of the best Superman movie I ever saw to give away to whoever tells me the name of the hottest Lois Lane of all time.

redbone

Poor little rich girl BeYonce can’t seem to get any good press lately. Her latest media kerfluffle is about the chic artsy photos she took for some French fashion mag. In the photos she has makeup applied to darken her face.

About gotdamn time!

BeYonce’s ENTIRE media history presentation has been about highlighting all of her features which are Eurocentric. Her fake blonde hair. Her airbrushed lightened complexion. Her blue eyes?!?!? The only way BeYonce has identified with the Black experience in America is her silly name. Okay, my bad, also her Venus of Hottentot backside. My bad for omitting that.

Black girls have the hardest way to go when they choose to be fashion models. The industry that fetishizes Black girls does not fux with them fashionistically. This is why folks are consuming hair straightening and skin bleaching cremes like its nobody’s business. Still and all, Beyonce’s team wouldn’t know how to spin this story if I wrote it for them.

It’s Black History Month (ugghh, yeah I know) followed by Women’s History Month. Maybe someone could knock on Tina Knowles cement wig and tell her that her daughter is an icon for BLACK WOMEN. She should be pwning February and March as iconic as she is right now instead of backpedaling away from this story. Black women come in a myriad of complexions and BeYonce should act like she is celebrating that diversity.

KanYe Only Used Some Of The Lights…

ye tudda

KanYe’s latest album is filled with so many talented collaborations that I thought he would make sure his visuals contained that same global perspective. Instead he takes the song which along with ‘Lost In The World’ has the best universal sound and makes a very narrow-eyed video.

Sure Rihanna has nice tits, but I can’t get past that silly red wig. She looks like the Wendy’s fast food restaurant chain mascot’s bastard child. Hype Williams is skating on his rep at this point by copying the conventions of other people’s videos.

I hope KanYe goes back to his arthouse ambitions for the next video.

This pop art shit is wacksauce.

cap america

2011 is going to be the summer of the Marvel Studios blockbusters. THOR is going to be epic. How can it not be? It’s storyline is already based on the myths of the Norse gods. Captain America is going to be everlasting epicness. I mean, what myth could be greater than the great white hope? Especially with how Marvel Studios has been connecting all of their film properties with comicbook references and cameo shots.

Don’t be surprised to see Wolverine in this movie. He and Cap have history. Most of it not so pleasant.

cap america

I heard that Cap’s old time sidekick Bucky will be in the flick, not on some Batman and Robin steez, but more on some grown man shit.

Red Skull too FTW!

cap america

I’d like to see Cap merc’k some HYDRA agents like he did to Baron Blood back when John Byrne was penciling his comicbook.

I don’t know if Disney would allow the heartless Captain America to hit the screen but I have hopes.

Beware The Black Mamba…

black mamba

Nike is going all in to make the Kobe signature show something sought after on the level of the Air Jordan. It ain’t gonna happen even tho’ Kobe Bryant may end up retiring with more rings than his Airness.

Still and all, this extended play commercial directed by Robert Rodriguez is fiyahverks.
