The Boot Camp Clique Chronicles…

Thanks to you interconnected networks aka the internets for helping me grab the ear of the folks at Timberland. The Boot Camp Clique videos have been seen by some of the higher ups at the brand and my fanboy love is getting its overdue respect.

I was pleasantly surprised to come home one night and see a massive box from the Timberland Company (via Epiphany Marketing) on my doorstep. Even if my box didn’t have my name on it I was still geeked the fux out of my mind to feel like I had been chosen.

The boots are the classic 10061 style. Some folks call these the ‘cheese’ boots. I put these shoes in my top 5 Hip-Hop sneakers of all-time. The boots are built for four(4) season wearability. I’ve seen kids playing basketball and handball in these shoes as well as their ubiquitous presence on countless construction sites.

The 10061s are one of the most enduring, iconic descriptions of the American work ethic next to Levis and a New York Yankees baseball cap. The smell of the nubuck suede is undeniable. The last of the stitches is unbreakable. The silicon rubber lug sole is unstoppable. The 10061 on your feet make you invincible.

The Timberland socks sent with the boots were a supreme touch from the Team Epiphany crew. The socks complete my Timberland 10061 footwear system.

The packaging and the boots were a dope surprise, especially to see that I’m on Timberland’s radar, but the real win was on the inside of these boots. Timberland’s patented Anti-Fatigue insoles are the best detail added to the new 10061. I can wear these boots now like I rock a pair of SB Dunks. All day long.

Editor’s note: The Complex mag crew asked me to give a sentence or two about my impressions to the Watch The Throne event. It looks like I OD’d on the hype and TWote too much. Here’s what I said…

I’m calling this album Gattaca Rap. In the new iteration of the classic future dystopian flick we will see Jay-Z reprising the role of Ethan Hawke and BeYonce cast as Uma Thurman. KanYe West of course plays Jude Law since his DNA is all over this record.

‘No Church In The Wild’ featuring Frank Ocean

Jay-Z is as awkward in this genetically modified world as Ethan Hawke was, but just like Hawke escaped from Earth so did Jay-Z escape from the Marcy Houses to another world outside of Brooklyn. But maybe it was the planet of Brooklyn where Jay-Z has always belonged? Maybe Jay-Z doesn’t need to be circling around Saturn since his vehicle of choice is a Maybach anyhoo? I wanted to hear him craft verses that explained what the rare air of outerspace smelled like, but Jay-Z is still too preoccupied with a mortal imagination. Albeit a wealthy one, still hardly one belonging to a god who can hold a supernova star in his hand.

‘New Day’

KanYe West isn’t limited by his imagination, although he is burdened by his tragic Midwest upbringing for attempting to put a gilded hood ornament on a rocket ship. It’s called doing too much. There are times when his flourishes are truly fantastic (MBDTF) and there are moments in Watch The Throne where I have no idea what he is musically doing to my ears. I’ll blame myself for not having the right DNA hexcode to truly understand KanYe. Maybe, just maybe, this album has such a cosmic sound that I got lost in the translation.

‘Welcome To The Jungle’

Watch The Throne means everything to some people and nothing to others. I’m finding myself exactly in the middle, loving some of the tracks for Jay-Z’s honesty and Kanye’s musicality and skipping over half of the songs that I just don’t get. I wanted this album to be an instant classic for me, but after taking the piss test at Gattaca Aerospace Corporation my genome must have been deemed invalid? It’s like I got to the launch site too late to ride on the spaceship, but I still watched the liftoff. Whoever made it onto the spaceship is having a good time I suppose while I’m stuck here on Earth with the other invalids. My only consolation is that the hype machine powering this spaceship will run out of gas before it reaches Mars.

‘Life Off’ featuring BeYonce

No Church In The Wild stays on the loop tho’.

I’ma put 2.5/5 Blackstronaut Tangs on this spaceship.

SNEAKER FIENDS UNITE!

SneakerCON in Washington D.C. was a popoff. We held a warm up at MajorDC in Goergetown and then we enjoyed two (2) days of convening with some of the district’s best collectors and connoisseurs of sneaker culture.

As you might prA’li imagine, I copped a few pairs. For those of you who bristle at my cavalier fiscal attitude keep this truth in mind… If this economy ever goes completely into the shitter having money in a bank will be worth even less than my shoe collection.

While I tumble towards hell in a handbasket with the rest of America I decided to make a little video of my D.C. pickups and recaps from Saturday and Sunday SneakerCONs. You only live once Internets, and some of us don’t even live at all. Enjoy…

The internets is going in hard [ll] for the whole August to celebrate the 1yr anniversary of the Combat Jack Show. The BYOB BBQ has a nice little venue. August 20th is the date. Brooklyn is the planet.
