My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy…

My album review didn’t make the cut for AOL Black Voices so I decided to up it here at DP.com for those of you what fux with ‘Ye Tudda…

Dark Fantasy
Can we get much higher? Don’t be fooled by the angelic chorus because this is Kanye in his darkest chamber. Suicidal tendencies over the meanest drum program. This would be a beautiful ending, but this is only the beginning.

Gorgeous (feat. Kid Cudi & Raekwon)
The piano on this song reminds me of a shootout in a dusty western town.

Power (feat. Dwele)
Power sounds so incredible on this cheap ass Macbook I use. Nothing I download ever sounds this good on my computer. When Kanye leaked this song 10 years ago (FYI internets time: 1 month = 1 year) it was fire and it is still the shit that makes me want to do the Riverdance step. Kanye has entered the matrix.

All Of The Lights
Damn shun, this is the first time I even heard this song. Rap music just got a mosh pit again. Fake drums x synthetic horns = real dopeness. For those of you that live in or around Flatbush Brooklyn let me promise you that this song will be a pan favorite at J’ouvert 2011.

Monster (feat. Rick Ross, Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj)
Kanye merc’ks his verse but this song was the official coronation of Nicki Minaj as rap music’s current queen. Any of y’all remember back when ‘Ye claimed that Nicki Minaj was the greatest female rapper ever? I scoffed at that statement immediately. I feel like Kanye set me up on that one. He knew what he had in the can.

So Appalled
This album is getting ugly with features. Everyone is on their ‘A’ game. You don’t want to go to the studio without your heat rocks loaded in the clip. I don’t even mess with Pusha T like that, but now I’m gonna have to give him my ear (if he is on a Kanye track). I’m also gonna give Kanye’s weedcarrier a pass on this track because at least he knows how to play his lane.

Devil In A New Dress
Aw man, I wish this preview copy had liner notes. I can’t believe Kanye back on that soul ish. The guitar player has been killing these tracks.

Runaway (feat. Pusha T)
If you ever needed to tell someone “It isn’t you, it’s me. I’m the douchehammer.” This would be your soundtrack. I’m also calling this Pusha’s best verse for his life. Yeah I know, angry Clipse stans storm the DP.com server in 4, 3, 2…

Hell Of A Life
Punk pop electro rock Yeezy. I have to hear this song in the club. Is that a harpsichord?!?

Blame Game (feat. John Legend)
Beautiful track. The Chris Rock ad libs at the end are out fuxin’ rageous.

Lost in the World
Do you realize that this song is going to be some tremendous world-beat jam? In Brazil, South Africa and even Antartica with the penguins you will hear this song.

Who Will Survive In America
Evolutionary verses from the master, Gil Scott-Heron. Kanye sees many herons, heroines and heroin. Heroin is the gateway to hell. Can Kanye save his soul?

He did it again. This dude is now five for five. If Jay-Z is the Michael Jordan of rap Kanye West is starting to look like the Bill Russell. I listened to the ‘clean’ version of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and I feel like I lost something in the translation of what may have been censored. The tracks posted here are from the explicit version tho’. The philosophical meaning I take from the album is that ‘Ye Tudda stays in conflict with himself and all the expectations and restrictions that others have for him.

This is the first rap album that delivers a soundscape with the richness of a Quincy Jones production level. It isn’t just the flood of features from producers and musicians but the presentation of Hip-Hop as this global sound with no borders. The album belongs to no musical genre. It is punk rock and R & B all at the same time. The album has no country or nationality. It is American, Brazilian, African and European. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy needs no other label than ‘Hip-Hop.

BluCheezTV is back on they Kid Cudi shit.

Special thanks goes out to DJ Franchise for mailing me this Boba Fett hoody before I sent him a payment for it. That is what I meant by true believers.

This fanboy video is really a dedication to my mom and my dad who raised me in Corona Queens just walking distance from the 7 train, Flushing Meadows Park and LaGuardia Airport. They gave me the space to dream about outer space.

joell ortiz

Go to VillageSlum for more pix…

Hip-Hop still has the ability to surprise me after all of these years. It’s still confident and boisterous letting you know it is in the building. It’s still trying to come up, by hook or crook. And it is still so New York, and by that I mean Brooklyn.

Last night Joell Ortiz hosted a Hip-Hop homecoming at the legendary nightclub S.O.B.’s with a few hundred of his friends and two of the hottest rappers in the streets. Sean Price and Troy Ave came thru to represent for their respective parts of Brooklyn.

This show was so Hip-Hop there might have been only two chicks in the building. One of them being Sean P’s wife, Mz.B. The other was some sloppy drunk white chick. In the NYC I grew up in this chick would be sporting a buck fifty on the morning after but NYC now is way more forgiving of disrespectful people. Hell, even Giuliani was voted in twice.

As much as Hip-Hop needs the arthouse aspirations of a kanYe West to aid in its global growth it still needs the underground artists like Joell Ortiz and Sean Price that give back to the culture by returning to it’s roots in clubs like S.O.B.’s and giving opportunities to young artists like Troy Ave to experience the energy of a sold out live show.

cudi

I suppose this was bound to happen to Kid Cudi at some point. He was bound to make a piece of music that was so personal and so self-referential that even I couldn’t fully fux with him musically. Cudi’s second album starts off feeling like a continuation of the slept on classic ‘Man On The Moon: The End Of Day’. But by the end of the follow up disk I feel like Cudi is more in the dusk of his musical inclinations than at the dawn.

Kid Cudi never really escapes the melancholy of the Euro dub downtempo sound that he explores throughout this disk. Yet he still has bright moments on this disk and I still find myself singing along at points, but I miss the adrenaline shots and the whimsy contained in MotM1. ‘Man On The Moon2’ is so serious and brooding at times that I think it might be a chore now for Cudi to enter the recording booth for his solo projects. What helps Kid Cudi to still deliver is the reality which centers his sound.

Kid Cudi is filled with soul music and you would have to be a robot not to feel his need to connect to the listener. There are two features on the album with Mary J. Blige that I will play continuously. These tracks best represent the album’s production for me. The music beds on these songs is spartan, to describe them at best. The real music is Cudi and Mary J. pouring out their souls to hit their notes. Think of 808s with all the heartbreak and none of the autotune.

Kid Cudi featuring Mary J.Blige – ‘Don’t Play This Song’

Kid Cudi featuring Mary J.Blige – ‘These Worries’

The song that defines this album is the title track ‘Mr.Rager’. This is my favorite joint on the album as well. This is what makes Cudi so dope to me as a rapper dude in 2010+ Hip-Hop. The song is anthemic and inspiring. It isn’t for the clubs or the corner. It’s for the spaceship and the next stop is the Andromeda galaxy. If Hip-Hop is going to fulfill its destiny and save the planet Earth it will need a Kid Cudi to add his universal imagination to the soundscape.

If you don’t believe that Hip-Hop can transport you to another galaxy, to another time and place, why do you listen to the shit? To confirm that colored peoples can stand in front of a bodega? I have the luxury to already know this reality [/sarcasm]. I live that everyday. I wonder what Black peoples live like on alternate Earths in distant galaxies. So does Kid Cudi and that is why I fux with dude [ll].

*This drop goes out to DJ Franchise from Know The Ledge for taking out the time and scrilla to copp a Star Wars Boba Fett hoody and ship it to me on the strength. Just like so many of the true believers that keep the lights on at DP.com
