red hook

Editor’s note: The pic above was sent to us from the intrepid BK journalist Willis Still Sunsweet, from WhoWalkInBrooklyn, who attended the DJ Premier x DJ Scratch performance hosted by CityParks in Red Hook. Willis was with us at the BlackMoon Boot Camp show in Crown Heights as well. The scene in Red Hook looks a lot different from the outset. Folding chairs at a Hip-Hop show? Brooklyn, no actually Red Hook, stand the fuck up! I’ma let Willis Still Sunsweet tell it…

Peep Evil Dee at left getting his photo taken with mad Asian crate diggers… The scene was okay, mix of ‘hood, Asians, white beat kids and curiosity seekers but you know how these things are– not the most compelling musical experience.

Danny Castro brought up some cat from Detroit, Niles Davis (?!) before who did a L-O-N-G “Phantom of the Opera” rap over symphonic bluster. It was ok but hard to get hold of tho’ he did take off his fisherman hat a lot.

Danny Castro had his history mixed up a bit, saying we’d all get shot 10 years ago, which ain’t true at all. 20 years ago Red Hook was a rough place but mostly on ladies of the night who didn’t make enough paper for their pimps…

Best part of night is stopping at Fairway for crab meats…

Fairway fun fact: that used to be a police impound yard in mid-late ’90s. Do you remember when ODB was all in the news here with his alleged shoot-outs, traffic accidents, etc? That was also last visible gasp of mafia killings– an “associate” thrown out bleeding from car by Grand Army Plaza, BODY FOUND IN TRUNK of car at impound yard, etc.

Brooklyn, MAKE SOME NOISE!

messengers

It is often the artists from the most disenfranchised, impoverished nations that can speak to the true nature of Hip-Hop. To combine all music, art, culture and people into one is the essence of Hip-Hop. With the use of the drum and the voice.

A few weeks ago when J.Period was working on the Bring Your Own Blogger BBQ mixtapes he told me of this project to combine the sound of K’Naan with some of the world’s most respected musical messengers. K’Naan hails from Mogadishu, Somalia. A region that has been embroiled in violent conflict for the past two decades. So many rappers fantasize about their communities as warzones but few have survived in one and even less speak of the peace, justice and love that our world needs right now.

With this idea in mind J.Period and K’Naan began crafting this project. A mashup mixtape with music honoring the great FELA KUTI, BOB DYLAN and BOB MARLEY. The project sounded too monumental from the outset. I’m glad J.Period was able to pull it off.

The full 3-part project is set to be released on September 1st over at J.Period’s website. Here’s a preview of what J.Period is calling ‘The Messengers’ featuring K’Naan in tribute to FELA KUTI, BOB DYLAN and BOB MARLEY.

1st dynasty

Two thousand years ago the Chinese emperor commissioned an army of warriors to follow fim into the after life to do battle with his enemies. The warriors were impressive for their scale, quantity and their design. Two thousand years ahead of the industrial revolution in the west China had already begun their industrial EVOLUTION. At the end of the day can you create something that forever changes the landscape around you?

Method Man, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck – ‘C.R.E.A.M.’

Wu-Tang’s place in the Hip-Hop canon should be secured by this point, but as true artists they don’t retire from creating new art, to be dissected, criticized and hopefully enjoyed. I might have been one of the few listeners around these parts that enjoyed the 8 Diagrams album from the Wu. It was an evolved sound from RZA, but it still contained the undeniable Wu elements. Wu-Tang makes music that is like triumphant marching anthems.

Raekwon, GZA, RZA, Masta Killa – ‘Rushing Elephants’

Method Man, Inspectah Deck, RZA, GZA – ‘Stick Me For My Riches’

Listening to these recent tracks featuring Wu members I don’t see any erosion in their skillsets or in their ability to create content describing elements of streetlife and lyrical swordmanship. Wu-Tang is still that supergroup that sets the gold standard for what can be achieved. This is what SlaughterHouse is going to try to recreate in a small window of time and space. It isn’t even fair to the SlaughterHouse collective to make comparisons at this point.

Redman, Raekwon, Method Man, Ghostface Killah – ‘4 Minutes 2 Lockdown’

Raekwon featuring Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Inspectah Deck – ‘House Of Flying Daggers’

Wu-Tang is forever…

^ Thinking of a master plan…

This week has been one of the craziest ever in my life. My day job is crazy enough as it is without having a project like the one I am trying to prep for a ribbon cutting in another four weeks. The Mayor’s podium will be at that joint too so that makes everyone extra anxious. I don’t really have the time to speak to y’all right now. Especially if I’m going to keep my afterwork schedule so brawlick. On Thursday I left the dayjob and was motivating to the PNC Radio studios to listen to Che Grand’s new album ‘Everything’s Good Ugly’. God was already speaking to me and I wasn’t even listening.

I exited the subway and as I was walking down Jay Street I heard someone call me by my family name. Dallas is my government name, my Hollywood name, but that isn’t the name that my family uses to address me so I was immediately disarmed and stopped in my tracks. Who the fuck knows me like that in the DumBo section of Brooklyn?!? Wherever you are God sees you and sure enough it was my man GARY from forever. What the fuck is G doing over here? Although if anyone could be anywhere it would be G.

GARY is fearless and knows how to walk the planet. I shouldn’t ever be surprised if I see a picture of GARY on the space shuttle. G has the fake credentials to get him access on the space station. I hugged my lord in the middle of Jay Street for forever. When I asked G what made him drive through DumBo he told me he was looking to see what the fuck these white were up to. Lol. G said that earlier that day he was wondering what was going on with me. I know who put that seed in his mind too. KENNY WASHINGTON. That dude loved Rakim to death and used to transcribe all of his verses into a notebook. There was a Rakim show later this night at the Highline Ballroom. KENNY wanted to go with his dudes GARY and me.

G and I went back around the way and politicked with the dreads. We twisted up in the park on Franklin and Montgomery just like it was 1989. G’s peoples came down from the building. GARY admonished dude for coming to the cipher without a flame. They playfully argued back and forth before G went to the whip and got his lighter. GARY told dude of the adventures that he, KENNY and I used to get ourselves in. NYC escapades all day every day. Car thefts, boosting missions, 40ozs and blunts on the back of subway trains. It was an everyday operation to survive and thrive in the city without getting familiar with the beast. It still is. The beast rolled down Franklin Avenue and slowed down in front of us. I was just finishing the dutch right then and I tossed it into the grass.

Then my Blaxberry rang out. It was my dude HowFresh at the Rakim show. How had two tickets left and he wanted to know if I could use them. I asked GARY if he and his dude were down to make the trip into the city for this Rakim show? You have to ask some Brooklyn cats that. I knew G was down for the crown and his homey said yeah too. KENNY was definitely in the building. He engineered this whole evening. We drove up to Highline and HowFresh met us outside the venue. Right then Combat Jack and his lovely wife walked up to the spot. We all walked up in that joint and enjoyed the show performed by one of the greatest emcees to ever hold a microphone.

Thank you KENNY.

Thank you GOD.

*A special thank you to DIEGO from Cornerstone Marketing for giving me a press pass.
**Thanks to HowFresh for giving away another set of tickets off the TWitter responses.
