Emotional Outfits…

Before I ever met the Outdoorsmen I had a chance to build with the Timeless Truth movement. These brothers brought that glorious fabric of classic NYC back to life. Timeless Truth embodies that Polo/Timberland/NorthFace/Nike/NewEra lifestyle we love so much at this site.

The project that Timeless Truth has been working on since the beginning is cooking up perfectly. Rock-It Science is straight up sautee status and about to be served like a heatrock. The appertif is called ‘Brugal y Presidentes’ and that’s just to let you know they NEVER gonna forget where they come from.

Lastnite’s show at the Highline Ballroom deserves to be credited to Vintage Gear Addicts and the Hip-Hop community they’ve been building for all their life. Timeless Truth is gonna be the piece to complete the puzzle for this Queens rap takeover. Make sure you bookmark their page if you fux with DallasPenndotcom.

Rap’s Greatest Goddess…

Monday, December 26th, 2011

My parent’s used to have an African fertility statue in their crib which looked like Rah Digga. She is unquestionably atop Mount Olympus in the pantheon of rap’s greatest emcees. I was incredibly honored when she accepted my invitation to be a guest on the Combat Jack Show.

Rah Digga’s history cuts a swath thru Hip-Hop that is truly phenomenal. From Q-Tip to Busta Rhymes to Eminem to the Fugees she has been inside the camps of some of the game’s greatest rappers and entertainers. And Rah is still hungry to flex her skills. This fact doesn’t bode well for Barbie doll rappers.

Rah Digga never relied on her good looks to make her music pretty. It doesn’t hurt her chances tho’ that she is beautiful. For a veteran emcee like Rah Digga to attract new fans into her fanbase you might think she’ll fall into the phony pop music trap. Nope, she has never backed down from challenge. Rah Digga is keeping it 100. And she ain’t never lied.

Pardon The Interruption…

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

A few weeks ago on the Combat Jack Show we learned that Jarobi(ATCQ) and Dres(BlackSheep) were coming together to form a group and keep the spirit of the Native Tongues collective active and current.

You certainly can’t get any more current than taking on the greedy capitalism which is fueling our economic system to its destruction. That’s the theme for the group’s first single off their upcoming album.

EVITAN is NATIVE spelled backwards but there ain’t backwards about the direction these brothers are moving in. EVITAN is traveling at the speed of life so if you are still sleeping please pardon the interruption.

The Roots Come Undun…

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

The pouring rain this nite was the perfect storm for going to a funeral. The wake was for a young man named Redford Stephens who lived so fast and died so young. The soundtrack for the funeral would be the Roots’ 13th studio album titled ‘UnDun’.

UnDun is a musical narrative retracing the life of a young man who choose the street life just to get by. As a street dude he knew his time was limited but he was determined to get his, if not in the here and now, definitely on the otherside.

The theme of UnDun is the Philadelphia story. And the Chicago story. And the St.Louis story. And the Camden story. Young men can’t discover their value or opportunity unless they are precariously close to losing it all. And most of them do. Redford Stephens did.

The tragic destiny for Redford Stephens is made noble by the Roots musical narrative. So maybe he does finally come up after all even tho’ he isn’t around to see his victory. Redford Stephens triumph will be the kids who hear his story and choose the classrooms over the corners.

UnDun is another masterful example of the Roots dedication to placing the highest level of art within their music. The Roots will always be the greatest live experience that Hip-Hop has to offer but they also respect the architects of this genre who lived thru the real struggle.

The essence of that sound is still here in their music if you want to open your ears to hear it.
