Russell Keeps It Real…

rush

I caught rap music pioneering wig owner Russell Simmons speaking at Barnes & Noble bookstore at Union Square. I dipped into the bookstore to try and snatch some ZZZ’s before the College Music Journal events popping off later that nite. Russell Simmons just happened to be there to talk about the DefJam anniversary coffee table picture book.

Say what you like about Russell being an unapologetic shill for himself and you would be correct, but also know that he has been at the forefront of Hip-Hop’s musical and cultural dominance. Russell did this to shift the paradigm from the gatekeepers who would only admit disco acts onto the pop music playlist

I always knew that rap music had died once it became a form of popular culture’s experience, but rap music would not have even made it that far if Sylvia Robinson’s design would have flourished. Russell concedes that the SugarHill Records founder only wanted to use rap to make 12″ dance singles.

Disposable artists? Isn’t that what rap music is all about now?

NO SMILING…

My boy Gudtyme gave me this lesson for the industry many years ago. There will be NO SMILING in the VIP section. It has to suck to work in an industry where you have to be fake in order to move up.

MarqSpekt isn’t likely to put on a fake face in order to move around in the rap game. That’s why you better listen up because who knows how long he’ll tolerate the bullshit. Here’s another track from his project with Kno from Cunnylinguists.

Population Control…

The title track from Statik Selektah’s latest project ‘Population Control’ gets the visual treatment with Sean Price as the lynchpin.

“I am a very mean rapper, shoot the club up and I am never seen after”

Job Well Done…

Bronsolino and Statik Selektah’s project appears to be coming along quite nicely. I have to admit that Action Bronson has a flow built for jazzy breaks and interludes. The production that Tommy Mas did on Dr.Lechter already showed that point.

This joint here is a nice way to prime the people for this collaboration. Bronson doesn’t do the rappity rap thing you might expect from a so-called white rapper. Just some depraved drug, sex and rock and roll raps. Niiiiiice.
