Bajah + Dry Eye Crew – ‘Honda’

bajah

The Roots Jam Session last night was a total OKayPlayer family affair. Bajah + The Dry Eye crew was in the building to do a mini set from their mixtape ‘Kings Of Salone‘.

B+DEC is from Sierra Leone and their music reflects the global influence of Hip-Hop and dancehall. It’s been so long since anyone has used to rap music to oppose images of the gun that I almost forgot what that sounded like. It takes artists from war torn regions to remind us of how special life really is. This is the feeling you get from watching Bajah + Dry Eye Crew perform. Singers and dancers fill the stage like a house party.

I’m still waiting to get a copy of the feel good anthem for 2009 – Tell Somebody The You Love Somebody. That can’t be the title but it is the refrain of the song. Bajah is more dope music that you need to have on your hard drive so you can switch gears inside of the rap music lane.

hl roots

There are only two more dates remaining to catch the Roots live jam session at the Highline Ballroom. The Roots have been tearing the roof off this venue during their run as the Jimmy Fallon show house band. Each show has been incredible as guest performers sit in with the Roots every evening and create magical sonic blends.

hl roots

The Roots are the perfect band to host these jam sessions because their talents are in morphing their sound to fit any subgenre of music. They got rock, reggae and rhythm and blues all down pat along with their obvious Hip-Hop and rap (natch). It’s been fun to watch the band shapeshift to match the style of their guest’s music as opposed to making their guests come find them.

hl roots

Music is a movement in your ears and your eyes. Good music rises upward like so much of the WBW smoke you will find inside of the Highline Ballroom. The Roots climb to higher ground during the sets everytime. Just when I think I have had my mind blown they find a way to do it all over again. Treat yourself to a Roots show at the Highline and tell me if my hyperbole isn’t just honesty.

Shouts to Nattiez on the flicks above. Thanks to Shamz, Dan and Ginny over at OKayPlayer. Biggup to JaiSlayer, Polotron, Ruffian, 40Diesel, Blagavelli, Braden, Joe, Cymone, Stevie, and all the DP.commenters that have met me up in the spot.

Two more to go party people.

Gwen Guthrie – ‘Ain’t Nothing Goin’ On’

It was just a few years ago that Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro tailback[ll] LARRY JOHNSON had almost as many Roc chains as Memphis Bleek. You don’t get those baubles by baring your breasts on Bourbon Street either. You have to work your tail off to come up on those necklaces. Back in those days Jay-Z and L-J were roomies in a multi-million dollar Trump Tower condo.

Then Jay-Z had to fux shit up by getting married. And Larry had to fux shit up hanging around Fantasia. Jay-Z even repo’d some of the Roc chains that Larry had been rocking.

lj

The real nail in the coffin was Larry getting fired from his day job. Now who is gonna go splitsies on the condo with Jay? A milli is a big nut to swallow[ll] with an NFL unemployment check. Good thing LeBron is still throwing up the Roc sign. Maybe Jeter is in the market for a roommate.

I feel bad for Larry though.

I’m sure he’s gonna miss the camaraderie.

lj

Fux a camaraderie! This shit is war. The DP.com football pool is like a bunch of rowdy schoolkids on the back of the bus. Everybody is pulling and tugging each other [ll], but the leader remains the same. Flacco’s Mighty Unibrow can’t be stopped. I don’t just simply need him to fall off, but I need everyone in the top10 to take a dive. That way I can gift myself this XBox360 DJ Hero prizepack.

Do I have an XBox360? No. But beating the ass off all of you poolers would be priceless. I want the glory more than the videogame. I want to say that I beat the best fux’n pick ’em poolers on these here internets. After that happens I am good.

moshino

I was on the internets doing a search for my IC homey Casimir when I came across the above image that was rendered by Japanese artist KATSURA MOSHINO. It reminded me of some things I have seen at FreeDarko.com and I imagine that is where FD’s graphics dudebro gets some of his inspiration.

I vaguely remember the illustration because it was part of a Nike campaign in 1998 for their Forceposite basketball shoes. I owned a pair of these kicks because they were fresh as hell and combined some of my favorite Nike memes like air and styrofoam. The shoes were actually heavy for a pair of foam sneakers but the silver metallic finish was a neck breaker and when you are in the business of styling on fools you are gonna need a pair of kicks in your repertoire that make people look twice.

foamposite

The Forceposite shoe was worn by Tim Duncan in the same lockout shortened NBA season that the Spurs defeated my Knicks for the title. That didn’t stop me from wearing these sneakers though. Whenever Nike does some wild shit like putting styrofoam, carbon fiber or solar panels on their sneakers I am always the first person in line to cop a pair.

So when Nike developed the Flightposite shoes for the young superstar Kevin Garnett you can bet your bottom dollar that I was ready to go and spend my last dollar to rock out with a pair. The Flightposite I shoe has since been retro’d and released back into the mainstream. My favorite pair was the Flightposite III because this was the most futuristic extraterrestrial close encounters alien looking shoe of all time.

flightposite

Now seeing an image of the Flightposite III got me all hot and bothered. I needed to put these shoes back in my life. Preferably a pair of deadstocked (never worn, not even tried on) 12’s for the everlasting icebox archive. The true story is that I own a pair that I have worn considerably since I copped them originally back in 2002. I just wanted another pair to keep in deep storage because I am crazy like that.

This is why the internets is my very best friend. I know that if I just put a wish out into the internets universe the thing I am looking for will find my inbox.

I’m gonna get these joints again before the year is over.

MANTRONIX ‘Needle To The Groove’ cover by Gnome/Gemini

I had to dig out this pic from the archives because ot os one of my single favorite pieces (did you see what I just said?) of art. I framed this jumpy in the crib but I haven’t mounted it on the wall yet. Imagine looking at this piece every single day? Your mind would be blown clear off like a shotgun hit you. That is how I felt looking through the OG Piecebook.

Thanks to Chino BYI and JuliBee for shooting me a copy. Now I have to find Chino’s first joint called ‘Mugs & Monsters’ which is an homage he curated to all the fly characters and portraits that artists burn up. If you want to talk about a fly character then you have to holler at my homegirl JuliBee. She came through 1st Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum of Art with her crew, LeeLo and Lil’ Chelsea.

julibee

Brooklyn Museum of Art 1st Saturday is still going on strong after a decade because they actively install new and fresh exhibits in the galleries that attract some of the best looking people in NYC. From Kehinde Wiley’s heroic Black male portraits to Takashi Murakami’s trippy canvases there is no shortage of amazing artwork that can found on display in the museum. Couple that with the fact that the museum boasts one of the nation’s best permanent collections of African and Egyptian artifacts on the regulack and you have a world class facility that you can tour for free every 1st Saturday.

The uber-attraction for this event was a compendium of photographs titled ‘Who Shot Rock’. The exhibit features pictures of iconic rock musicians. The problem with the exhibit was that there was no focus to the images displayed. Rock music has been with us for damn near sixty years. I don’t think anyone could curate an exhibit to comprehensively describe all of that time and all of the genres that have emerged from the American rock scene. Plus the images lacked a context for which they were describing the subjects pictured. It’s like looking at backstage photos of the Doors and then seeing a magazine cover of the White Stripes. WTF?!? Who fux’n cares.

The ‘Who Shot Rock’ exhibit will bring some asses into the museum but it is hardly one of the best curated exhibits that the Brooklyn Museum has hosted. The same could be said for the dance party that took place in the grand ballroom. DJ Evil Dee was listed as presenting a set of music that tied in to the ‘Who Shot Rock’ exhibit but he was more on a Michael Jackson x James Brown kick. Sure, that’s good music, and sure that is even rock music in a broad literal description of the genre, but it wasn’t fresh. Evil Dee made a major PU~ in my book for not playing any of these songs…

Jimi Hendrix – ‘Purple Haze’

David Bowie featuring Queen – ‘Under Pressure’

Funkadelic – ‘Who Says A Funk Band Can’t Play Rock’

The Clash – ‘Rock The Casbah’

Devo – ‘Whip It’

Red Hot Chili Peppers – ‘Give It Away’

Soft Cell – ‘Tainted Love’

Afrika Bambaataa – ‘Planet Rock’

Beastie Boys – ‘No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn’

The Police – ‘Roxanne’

The Clash – ‘This Is Radio Clash’

Queen – ‘Another One Bites The Dust’

Parliament – ‘I Call My Baby Pussycat’

Rock music is filled with dance grooves inside of its DNA. The deejay is responsible for bringing these truths to light. The deejay is the aural curator at the 1st Saturday dance party. Maybe I’ve been going to the BMA 1st Saturday event for too long because I know I could have rocked that ballroom better than this month’s deejay.

Hey @brooklynmuseum you need to holler at these internets.
