Dead Singers Get Better Promotion…

Other than the fact that MICHAEL JACKSON is no longer with us you would have to agree that he had a pretty good weekend.

Michael Jackson wins 4 American Music Awards

The Michael Jackson concert documentary ‘This Is It’ nears the $200m mark in domestic and foreign ticket sales

Michael Jackson’s death saved the US economy more than any stimulus package could. MJ’s death created jobs and got people back to work selling posters, calendars and all sorts of MJ memoribilia. It was the equivalent of the WPA from the entertainment industry.

All OBAAMA needs now is for Madonna, Barbara Streisand and Bruce Springsteen to die in 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively and he will be re-elected for sure. I wonder if more dead celebrities would be enough incentive to push the healthcare bill through?

All Day I Dream About Star Wars…

star wars

I may have watched the original three Star Wars episodes(4-6) at least 100x since I got the DVD’s in July. These are my favorite films of all time. I’m damn near 40yrs old and I still wouldn’t mind dressing up like any character from one of these movies. Not just on Halloween, but everyday.

So you might could think about the dilemma I am facing with adidas creating a pack of Originals brand kicks in homage to Star Wars?

adidas was smart enough not to leak the entire images of these products because they may ultimately be asscheeks. The shoes listed as ‘Stormtroopers’ are already looking like fails to me because the stormtrooper boots are all white with a black outsole. The ‘Vader’ ZX shoe has some promise tho’.

adidas even has some apparel dropping with this pack of shoes.

I have to see some bettter pics of this shit because I have a feeling that this might not meet the full DP fanboyz stamp of approval.

Stay tuned in sneaker fiends.

goliath

Even tho’ I don’t post drops at XXL anymore they still found a way to pwn me. Robbie from Unkut forwarded me the link where they list the Hip-Hop website 100. They took a nice little shot at the kid with their faint praise…

“A heavyweight in numerous ways, always-entertaining Dallas Penn and friends chew the fat about hip-hop, sneakers, food and ever-important boozing at New York City industry events.”

Whoever wrote that shit is a cockblower. I’m glad they are entertained tho’.

So the latest industry event for me to booze it up at wasn’t really an industry event per se. NYC has a nightlife scene that intersects the entertainment industry at a myriad amount of positions. The intersection last night was where sneakers, streetwear and Hennessy Black collide. It was the 5th anniversary of Goliath NYC up in east Harlem. You might remember that spot from several SFU-NYC tour videos.

Goliath is a nice little boutique nestled into EAST 105th Street. They are understated in their signage and appearance, but if you know the haps then you know how serious they go in. The crowd that made the trek to the store were all the most ardent fans of cutting edge streetwear and design. Nike Sportswear was lucky to have the centerpiece for the event.

The crowd was live as hell and the store was retarded packed inside and on the street outside. The gift bag rumors had everyone buzzing. You get spoiled in NYC with the idea that a gift bag is the minimum requisite for coming to a hype event. I’m more interested in drinking and building with my peoples that came through. The Almighty DJ KO was up in that piece as well as the big homey Meka (2DopeBoyz).

Don’t get it twisted and think that I wasn’t still trying to come up on some swag too. Mikey Fresh hit me off with two(2) limited edition Goliath fitteds. I already told Mek that I am holding a joint for him since he sk8’d before the hats were doled out. Definitely some fly ish right here.

Happy birthday Goliath.

Now when does the holiday sale kick off?

Classic Cover Art…

black panther

^ John Byrne’s Black Panther

I got a nice little e-mail from the publicist at DuckDown informing me they would be re-issuing the classic cover art from Sean Price’s ‘Monkey Barz’ CD, Smif-N-Wessun’s ‘Reloaded’ (today the theme IS reloaded) and the Buckshot – 9th Wonder collabo ‘Chemistry’ all as part of a compilation set.

Boot Camp Clik isn’t satisfied by simply being Hip-Hop’s longest lasting underground collective of artists. BCC are visionaries who have embedded some of my fondest memories within their art.

The artwork on Smif-N-Wessun’s ‘Reloaded’ is slick cowboy styling reminiscent of BladeRunner for the pistols that the main characters are wielding and Tokyo-type background.

The ‘Monkey Barz’ cover art is some of the best shit that has ever been put on a record jacket. Shouts to P-Funk artist Pedro Bell. I need this ‘Monkey Barz’ joint as a 12inch [ll] so I can frame it and hang it on my wall because that shit is hardbody deluxe.

Okay, I’m Reloaded…

Piecebook: Reloaded continues it’s all-city bombing tour. Tonight the event is gonna be freshly independent as in the IND line. Take the B or the Q train to the Church Ave station and walk up Church two blocks east to Ocean Avenue.

WEALTHY HOSTAGE
1924 Church Avenue

Wealthy Hostage is the host from 6pm to 9pm featuring graff artist KEO signing Piecebooks and putting together a small in-store exhibit. I wonder if my homey RAB CAC will be on hand? RAB used to king hard on the R40 subway cars that were exclusive to the BMT and IND lines back when I was checking for him. How funny do you think it was that when I first went to high school as a freshman at Brooklyn Technical RAB was in his senior year?

I don’t want to tell y’all exactly how long ago that was because RAB has mysteriously gotten younger than me (and I’m the Black Peter Pan). If you ain’t doing anything productive tonight and you want to some legendary art and drink some free beer you might should need to be Parkside Flatbush. And say what up to RAB.

*As a side note: In the early 1980’s Mayor Koch heralded the war on graffiti and the sight of top to bottom burners began to disappear memory. Some new city residents who don’t have a recollection of the good ol’ (read: bad) New York City subway system thought it would be a great idea for advertisements to cover to the outside panels of subway cars – top to bottom.

Graffiti was a nuisance and a crime because it wasn’t an advertisement from a sanctioned corporation. Originally it was just poor working class folks yelling out trying to be heard. Now it’s all about cheap trendy clothes.
