Wale Needs To Get His ‘Ambition’ Up…

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Let me get one thing clear, I fux with Wale. I dig his rhymestyle and his content has always felt smart to me. After his Seinfeld themed mixtape I was a fan. I still give Wale mad credit for namedropping Oksana Bauil. Who does that crazy shit?!? Wale does, but only on mixtapes.

Wale’s albums are a disappointment to me for not having the consistency of cleverness that his mixtapes boast. They are just… Meh. I felt that way about his debut CD ‘Attention Deficit‘ and I feel similarly nonplussed about this new project ‘Ambition’. Wale isn’t a bad rapper and he is far from boring but he does not dominate on his tracks the way he should. Wale is becoming a background rapper on his OWN music. I fux with the tracks I posted below tho’ almost all of them are R&B rap tracks.

When the Maybach Music honcho tabbed Wale for his team I thought that would be the watershed moment for his breakthrough. No one is more confident than Rick Ross. Who else in rap has survived as many fuck ups as Rick Ross? He’s gone from stealing the swag of a drug dealer, being a former law enforcement officer, to battling bloggers and the beast of all rappers, 50 Cent. If Rick Ross can rise up from all of that so can Wale from an embarrassing internets meme moment.

And Wale has risen up. His singular and obvious contribution to Maybach Music is that their sports references have jumped up several levels, and no one knows high end designer hypebeast shit like Wale. You see how crazy Rick Ross sneaker game is now? Give Wale the credit for that. I wish Ross would imbue Wale with the ability to make a consistent album. Not even a great album, just a joint not populated with features which disappear Wale into the background of his own ambitions.

‘Lotus Flower Bomb’ featuring Lloyd

‘Focused’ featuring Kid Cudi

‘Slight Work’ featuring Big Sean

‘That Way’ featuring Jeremih and Rick Ross

MarqSpekt x Kno = MACHETEVISION…

Friday, October 28th, 2011

When I think of the homey MarQ’Spekt he is kind of similar in spirit cloth to Timeless Truth and Meyhem Lauren. I met this cat and politicked with him about EVERYTHING except rap. We discussed Hip-Hop but he didn’t allude to being a veteran participant. Knowing everything I know now about ‘Spekt makes it easy and fun to post drops with his music.

MacheteVision is a project he has been cooking up for a minute. ‘Spekt took his time in building this joint to make it a testament to the Hip-Hop he grew up listening to and still believes in. Each one, teach one. Lyrical mastery. features with artists of like mind. No Hollywood. ‘Spekt has the entire album available for FREE streaming and I hope you support him after you enjoy some of this heat.

Yelawolf Is RadioActive…

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Yelawolf is going stadium status with his latest album ‘RadioActive’. He specifically said this album is his attempt to cross over to the mainstream rap music markets. After listening to the album in its entirety I definitely heard some of those ‘lighter in the sky’ arena rap songs. Apparently the direction from Eminem is paying off.

At least Yelawolf still keeps his live performances trill.

Russell Keeps It Real…

rush

I caught rap music pioneering wig owner Russell Simmons speaking at Barnes & Noble bookstore at Union Square. I dipped into the bookstore to try and snatch some ZZZ’s before the College Music Journal events popping off later that nite. Russell Simmons just happened to be there to talk about the DefJam anniversary coffee table picture book.

Say what you like about Russell being an unapologetic shill for himself and you would be correct, but also know that he has been at the forefront of Hip-Hop’s musical and cultural dominance. Russell did this to shift the paradigm from the gatekeepers who would only admit disco acts onto the pop music playlist

I always knew that rap music had died once it became a form of popular culture’s experience, but rap music would not have even made it that far if Sylvia Robinson’s design would have flourished. Russell concedes that the SugarHill Records founder only wanted to use rap to make 12″ dance singles.

Disposable artists? Isn’t that what rap music is all about now?
