NYC IS THE NEW JIM CROW…

Monday, February 28th, 2011

nypd

New York City leads the nation in the re-establishment of Jim Crow laws aimed at the disenfranchisement of Black people.

The public school system is designed to fail these kids at a young age thereby arresting their development and learning capabilities long before they enter high school. The resultant is that less Black kids enter specialized schools which can prepare them for the future and most Black kids opt out of the public school system altogether.

The next phase is the criminalization of Black youth within their communities by arresting them for minor offenses such as marijuana possession and loitering. Even on the public housing properties where they reside. More Blacks were stopped and searched by the police in the previous three years than in the fifteen years proceeding those three.

All this is almost making Giuliani’s time as the chief executive of New York look like the golden age for Black youth.

Do The XXL Freshmen Ever Graduate?

xxl freshmen

XXL magazine’s annual Freshmen cover always generates some controversy and discussion. The big argument with this year’s freshmen crop is that Yelawolf is now featured on two consecutive cover stories. Isn’t this is what pop culture does with their artists tho’? Cramming them down your throat whether you fux with them or not.

XXL magazine has officially become the Tiger Beat magazine for the Hip-Hop set. Shaun Cassidy was mentioned or pictured on almost every cover of that rag for several years.

The real question I have is how good is XXL at supporting the artists they say have next? Some of these freshmen end up being dropouts (no KanYe Tudda). Like I mean dropping out of the scene altogether. When is the last time you heard mention of Ace Hood?

I figured we could take a quick look at XXL’s past freshmen and review their GPA to see if these dudes are still taking ’em to school or have they been left back.

R.I.P. Dwayne McDuffie, Comicbook Pioneer…

Quiet as we have kept it, Black dudes are disproportionately comic book nerds. The whole idea of someone bringing justice to the planet is some Black bullshit. We are the ones that need the equality. White folks are mostly Lex Luthor in that they already own all the means to production and distribution, and they don’t have any serious intentions in upsetting the apple cart, unless that means adding more apples, of course.

Dwayne McDuffie was the quintessential comic book nerd who loved the medium so much that he dedicated his life to making it bigger, better and thankfully, Blacker. McDuffie founded Milestone Media company with which he created a series of comic book titles featuring superheroes from the darker side of the spectrum.

But it wasn’t just Black superheroes that McDuffie was concerned with creating but a reference for Black kids who could see and read about the diaspora in their communities. Poor, working class, educated and wealthy Blacks were all getting their burn.

The highest salute to McDuffie’s creative talent was that Warner Brothers media allowed him to revision their staple characters. The Justice League went from being a campy, corny 1970s kids cartoon to a seriously storied animated series for the new millennium. The key to McDuffie as a writer is that he understands that comic book characters have to represent the realized world, not the idealized world. In the realized world heroes aren’t always perfect, but they keep the faith.

This should be the lesson I think I will take from Dwayne McDuffie’s unfortunately too young demise.

I’ll keep the faith that one day a Black hero will rise to save us all.

McDuffie’s last piece of work was the adaption of the All-Star Superman graphic novel into an animated feature.

In Dwayne’s posthumous honor, I have several copies of the best Superman movie I ever saw to give away to whoever tells me the name of the hottest Lois Lane of all time.

Redbone In Blackface…

Poor little rich girl BeYonce can’t seem to get any good press lately. Her latest media kerfluffle is about the chic artsy photos she took for some French fashion mag. In the photos she has makeup applied to darken her face.

About gotdamn time!

BeYonce’s ENTIRE media history presentation has been about highlighting all of her features which are Eurocentric. Her fake blonde hair. Her airbrushed lightened complexion. Her blue eyes?!?!? The only way BeYonce has identified with the Black experience in America is her silly name. Okay, my bad, also her Venus of Hottentot backside. My bad for omitting that.

Black girls have the hardest way to go when they choose to be fashion models. The industry that fetishizes Black girls does not fux with them fashionistically. This is why folks are consuming hair straightening and skin bleaching cremes like its nobody’s business. Still and all, Beyonce’s team wouldn’t know how to spin this story if I wrote it for them.

It’s Black History Month (ugghh, yeah I know) followed by Women’s History Month. Maybe someone could knock on Tina Knowles cement wig and tell her that her daughter is an icon for BLACK WOMEN. She should be pwning February and March as iconic as she is right now instead of backpedaling away from this story. Black women come in a myriad of complexions and BeYonce should act like she is celebrating that diversity.

NYC Says Hello To ‘Melo…

Calm down kids…

You can understand in the land of unmitigated hype how the trade that brings Carmelo Anthony to MSG also brings some unchecked expectations. We are really gonna need a center or a bonafide big man on the block grabbing boards. Amar’e Stoudemire fouled out in the fourth quarter with four only rebounds.

If the Knicks were a rebound by committee team like the Riley/Van Gundy era we might be able to really make some noise in the watered down Eastern Conference. Since only Boston and Miami actually believe in themselves these Knicks might could sneak into the divisional round of the tourney, but somebody other than the guards better start grabbing boards.

But for tonight, the atmosphere was off the chain. I found myself lurking around the garden to see if I could catch something for the second half. No dice on a ducat. The Association’s buzz right now is on a trillion. The trade of Deron Williams to the Nets nearly stole the thunder from ‘Melo’s debut.

‘Melo def lived up to the hype by scoring 27 points even if it took him an Iverson-ish 25 attempts. I’ll give him a pass on the poor field goal percentage since he also secured 10 rebounds during his time on the floor. I’m starting to see the vision that Donnie Walsh, the Knicks general manager, was formulating this past summer The Knicks are almost there. All they need is a little Dontrevius on the sideline.
